Santiago de Compostela

 WHAT  IS SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA?

Santiago de Compostela, along with Rome and Jerusalem, one of the most important spiritual centers of the Christian world. According to tradition, this place is the tomb of St. James the Greater, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ.

For this reason, the city of Santiago de Compostela will become during the Middle Ages in one of the most important centers of Christian pilgrimage, creating a pathway crucial for communication in European history: the Camino de Santiago.

Between the tenth and eleventh centuries begin the pilgrimage to Compostela. El Camino was based on the French cities of Arles, Le Puy, Orleans and Vezelay. The Pilgrim's Way is introduced into Spain through Roncesvalles and Jaca. The road runs through the lands of Navarre, Aragon, La Rioja, Castilla y León and Galicia. This is the most popular route, called the French Way. But, there are other ways that lead to Compostela. The so-called Northern Route runs through the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias to reach Santiago across the province of Lugo. Another route cross Portugal and another that follows the ancient Via de la Plata from Seville to go to the same destination.

The traditional pilgrim dressed humbly. He wore a coat against the cold, wide-brimmed hat and good shoes. The esportilla was a kind of bag to store food. The drone was a long stick that helped to walk and scare the beasts. They had a pumkin hanging, which was used to store water. To identify, pilgrims sewed a shell or worships in his clothes. The pilgrim should visit the shrines in its path, calling for him to surrender some stamps as proof of having been there.

The pilgrim, who had completed the Camino, received an indulgence, he was forgiven of all your sins.
